Little Acts Can Help Save The Planet
According to plymouth.gov, an average human wastes about 30 gallons of water every day! That could fill up a fish tank that measures 36¼″ x 12 5/8″ x 16 ¾″ (L x W x H). What if you could reduce the amount of water that you wasted? In this blog post, I will be sharing environmentally friendly ideas that can help you reduce the amount of water that you waste in just one day!
How much Water can be Wasted in a Shower?
As you may know, a lot of water is wasted in taking a shower. Even though you may claim that you need a 15-minute shower to remove all of the dirt from your hair and body, we all know that you just want to relax in the warm water. The warm water might feel nice on your back, but it is definitely not doing the planet any favors. An average American uses 17.2 gallons of water in a shower when an average shower length should only use about 8.2 gallons of water. In case you don’t know, an average shower should only take about 5 minutes.
Breaking Your Habit
Having a little trouble breaking your long shower habit? Could you just stop taking long showers all together? Is the power of the warm water just too strong? Well, the same thing happened to me. I started to take five-minute showers but after only 4 days I gave up and switched back to my ten-minute showers. After a long 2 months of trying to break the habit, I came up with four steps to help break my habit and encourage others to do the same.
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Set a stopwatch to see how long you spend in the shower. Who knows, maybe you already only take five minutes to shower!
Step 2: Once or twice a week when you shower set a 5-minute timer and try to aim to shower in that time frame. Don’t go too fast, you still need to do a good job. You also shouldn’t do this step every time, as you need to “wean” yourself off of your long showers. Do this step for a week or two until you feel ready to move 0n to step 3.
Step 3: You are basically repeating step 2 but instead of only doing the step once or twice a week start setting a goal of four 5 minute showers. Once again don’t rush your shower, you can still enjoy a shower even if it is only five minutes. Do this step for one or two weeks until you feel ready to move on to step 4.
Step 4: Now since you are showing 4-7 times a week for 5 minutes, attempt to only spend 5 minutes for all of your showers. If you feel yourself relapsing, go back a step until you feel ready to move on again.
P.S if you love your warm showers like do, decide how many 5 minute showers you can commit to and do your best to stick to your commitment.
Having “sink-like manners” can impress your grandparent’s friends and family. But what are sink-like manners? If you have sink-link manners you conserve water by not leaving the water running while brushing your teeth or doing the dishes. Why should I have sink-like manners? Having sink-like manners can reduce how much water you waste in a matter of minutes if you don’t leave the water running while you are brushing your teeth, soaping your hands, and scrubbing the dishes. These actions could help you to reduce at least 14 gallons of wasted water. (An average faucet can use 1-3 gallons of water per minute. )
In conclusion, I truly hope that you take all of the information that I have given you and start reducing the amount of water that you waste! Good luck!
